Taking the Fear Out of Dental Care
As a certified sedation dentist in Athens, GA, Dr. Patrick offers peace of mind and body for his patients. If you avoid dental appointments because of stress and anxiety, you aren't alone. Dental phobia is a real and acknowledged condition. In fact, it’s estimated that as many as 1 out of every 5 adults in the United States has avoided getting the dental care they need out of fear or anxiety. Rest assured that with oral sedation, Dr. Patrick can help you relax enough in the dental chair to receive the treatments you need to keep your smile healthy and happy.
What Is Oral Sedation?
Oral sedation is a method of sedation dentistry that is designed to help patients alleviate their dental anxieties and soothe them enough that they can undergo the procedures their oral health needs. While other methods of sedation render you completely unconscious, oral sedation will keep you awake enough to respond to our requests during the procedure. However, it may feel like you fell asleep because it has an amnesiac effect. Once your appointment is over, chances are you won’t remember much or any of it at all!
What Can I Expect If I Undergo Oral Sedation?
If you and Dr. Patrick decide that you’re a good candidate for oral sedation, you’ll be prescribed a potent anti-anxiety pill to take about an hour before your procedure is set to begin. Since the medication is a sedative and you’ll begin to feel its effects fairly quickly, you’ll need someone to drive you to and from our office. Once you arrive, our team will start closely monitoring your vital signs to ensure your safety throughout your procedure. When your appointment is over, we’ll instruct your ride to keep an eye on you for the rest of the day, since the sedative often lasts for several hours. You should plan on spending the remainder of the day relaxing at home and not resuming work or school until the following day.
